Employee in the Spotlight
Jeff Elder: Brick Industry Icon
. . . Jeff soon established himself as one of the pre-eminent experts in structural clay masonry and was very influential with national associations including The Masonry Society, Western States Clay Products Association, International Masonry Institute, ASTM, and the Brick Industry Association (BIA). With BIA, Jeff led most marketing initiatives and led the development of BIM (Building Information Modeling) Masonry. BIM is an intelligent 3D model-based process that gives architecture, engineering and construction professionals the insight and tools to more efficiently plan, design, construct and manage buildings and infrastructure. The development of BIM gave the masonry industry a tool that makes designing with masonry easier and more cost effective.
As Sales Manager for Interstate Brick, Jeff was instrumental in developing training programs for the sales teams as well as educational seminars and lunch & learn presentations for the design community. Under Jeff’s direction, Interstate Brick became known for having the most welltrained sales staff. Their expertise enabled Interstate Brick to be successful shipping across the country, competing against local lower priced producers. It has been said that the Interstate sales team is responsible for selling systems that have benefited the entire brick industry over the past three decades.
After developing the industry’s best teams at Interstate, Jeff was promoted to General Sales Manager, responsible for all sales and marketing efforts for Interstate Brick and HC Muddox. In this role, both companies have developed programs and campaigns that have consistently out-performed the brick competition. In fact, following the recession in 2008, one of the only brick plants in North America that did not have to temporarily shut down due to the slowing marketplace. This is quite remarkable since the brick market dropped from a peak of 10 billion bricks sold to 5 billion sold today.
During the slowdown, one of the key projects that helped Interstate Brick weather the storm was the City Creek Project in Salt Lake City developed by the Church of Jesus Christ-Latter Day Saints. The project was originally designed as a post and beam building with modular brick veneer. The Church was considering other producers in addition to Interstate Brick. Jeff worked with the project design team that was looking to match the existing modular brick in the area. To do so, the Interstate production team, led by Gerry Gunning, developed a new brick product (8”x2 ¼”x16”) with a slot that looks like traditional modular brick when installed. This project highlighted the ingenuity that the entire Interstate team represents when they work together with designers on a project.
Jeff is not all business; he is a proud father of five sons that are each married with children. He and his wife, Lisa, enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren. Jeff is known within the company and the industry for his strong character and connection to his faith. He and Lisa are avid BYU football and basketball fans; they also enjoy hiking, skiing, boating and other outdoor activities. Interstate Brick and HC Muddox have been very fortunate in having a leader such as Jeff Elder.
